Web browser usage was led by Chrome in every supplied worldwide and regional view for August 2026. StatCounter recorded Chrome at 69.39% of worldwide browser share across all platforms, while Safari reached 15.83% and Edge 5.36%. The figures describe browser traffic and page views measured across StatCounter’s network, not a census of unique people or installed browsers.

How to read these browser statistics
All figures in this article refer to August 2026, the measurement month shown on the relevant StatCounter tables. “Share” means the percentage of browser traffic or page views observed across StatCounter’s network. It does not mean that the same percentage of people use each browser, nor does it measure the number of browsers installed.
The scopes also differ. Some figures cover all platforms, some isolate desktop, mobile, or tablet devices, and the Asia figure combines desktop and mobile. Those boundaries matter when comparing results. A browser can have a different share on a desktop screen than on a phone, and a regional total can differ substantially from the worldwide result.
The source for the worldwide all-platform figures is Browser Market Share Worldwide, published by StatCounter Global Stats. Device-specific figures use StatCounter’s desktop, mobile, and tablet tables.
Worldwide browser share across all platforms
Chrome was the dominant browser worldwide across all platforms in August 2026, with 69.39% of measured browser share. Safari followed at 15.83%, making it the only other browser above 10% in this view. Edge accounted for 5.36%, while Firefox reached 2.98%.
The remaining named browsers each represented smaller portions of worldwide traffic. Samsung Internet recorded 2.01%, and Opera recorded 1.94%. Together, these six named browsers show a market centered heavily on Chrome, with Safari forming the main alternative and a smaller group of desktop- and mobile-oriented competitors filling out the remainder.
| Browser | Worldwide share across all platforms |
|---|---|
| Chrome | 69.39% |
| Safari | 15.83% |
| Edge | 5.36% |
| Firefox | 2.98% |
| Samsung Internet | 2.01% |
| Opera | 1.94% |
These numbers should be read as a snapshot of measured traffic in August 2026. They are useful for understanding the browser environment a website may encounter, but they are not a direct count of users. The all-platform scope also blends desktop, mobile, and tablet behavior, so it can hide important differences between device categories.
Desktop browser statistics
Chrome held 73.28% of worldwide desktop browser share in August 2026, a higher percentage than its 69.39% all-platform figure. Edge was the second-largest named desktop browser at 10.46%. Firefox held 5.31%, and Safari held 5.24%, placing those two browsers at nearly the same level in the desktop view.
Opera accounted for 1.99% of desktop share, while Samsung Internet held 1.53%. The desktop table therefore shows a stronger position for Edge than the all-platform table does, while Safari’s desktop share was much smaller than its worldwide all-platform share. The difference reflects the device scope: desktop results exclude the mobile and tablet traffic that contributes to the all-platform totals.
The figures come from Desktop Browser Market Share Worldwide, the StatCounter table for August 2026. The leading six entries were:
| Browser | Worldwide desktop share |
|---|---|
| Chrome | 73.28% |
| Edge | 10.46% |
| Firefox | 5.31% |
| Safari | 5.24% |
| Opera | 1.99% |
| Samsung Internet | 1.53% |
For SEO and site publishing, this desktop distribution highlights why browser testing should include Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. The percentages describe observed share, not a technical requirement that every site support only the largest browser. They do, however, indicate which desktop environments contributed the greatest portions of measured traffic during the month.
Mobile browser statistics
The worldwide mobile picture was led by Chrome at 66.17% in August 2026. Safari was second at 25.87%, giving it a much larger share on mobile than in the worldwide desktop table. Samsung Internet recorded 2.52%, followed by Opera at 1.92%.
Two additional browsers appeared in the supplied mobile figures. UC Browser held 1.25% of worldwide mobile browser share, and Firefox held 0.75%. Firefox’s mobile share was therefore substantially smaller than its 5.31% desktop share, while Samsung Internet’s mobile share was higher than its desktop figure of 1.53%.
The source is Mobile Browser Market Share Worldwide. Its August 2026 results were:
| Browser | Worldwide mobile share |
|---|---|
| Chrome | 66.17% |
| Safari | 25.87% |
| Samsung Internet | 2.52% |
| Opera | 1.92% |
| UC Browser | 1.25% |
| Firefox | 0.75% |
Mobile traffic deserves its own measurement context because it is not interchangeable with desktop traffic. The mobile figures show Chrome and Safari accounting for most measured share, while Samsung Internet, Opera, UC Browser, and Firefox occupy smaller positions. The table does not establish why those differences occurred; it only reports the observed browser shares for the stated period and scope.
Tablet browser statistics
Chrome held 50.20% of worldwide tablet browser share in August 2026. Safari followed with 32.19%, while Android recorded 13.53% in the supplied tablet table. Samsung Internet accounted for 1.41%, Opera for 1.01%, and Edge for 0.87%.
Tablet results differed from both desktop and mobile results. Chrome remained first, but its 50.20% tablet share was lower than its 73.28% desktop share and 66.17% mobile share. Safari’s 32.19% tablet share was higher than its desktop share of 5.24% and its all-platform worldwide share of 15.83%.
The tablet-specific source is Tablet Browser Market Share Worldwide. StatCounter’s named tablet entries for August 2026 were:
| Browser or platform label | Worldwide tablet share |
|---|---|
| Chrome | 50.20% |
| Safari | 32.19% |
| Android | 13.53% |
| Samsung Internet | 1.41% |
| Opera | 1.01% |
| Edge | 0.87% |
“Android” is retained as the label shown in the supplied StatCounter result. It should not be silently treated as equivalent to Chrome or to a particular installed browser. The tablet table has its own platform scope, and comparisons with the other sections should preserve that distinction.
Regional browser market share
Europe’s all-platform browser share in August 2026 was led by Chrome at 62.66%. Safari held 17.80%, Edge 6.66%, Firefox 4.61%, Samsung Internet 3.45%, and Opera 2.17%. Compared with the worldwide all-platform result, Europe’s Chrome share was lower, while Safari, Edge, Firefox, Samsung Internet, and Opera each had a larger listed share.
The European figures come from Browser Market Share Europe. They cover all platforms, unlike the Asia figures below, which combine desktop and mobile.
Asia showed a more concentrated distribution in the supplied desktop-and-mobile table. Chrome held 77.64% of browser share in August 2026, followed by Safari at 10.12%. Edge accounted for 3.97%, Opera for 1.97%, Firefox for 1.64%, and Samsung Internet for 1.57%.
Those Asian figures are reported in Desktop & Mobile Browser Market Share Asia. Because the scope is desktop and mobile rather than all platforms, it should not be presented as a perfectly identical counterpart to the European all-platform table.
North America’s all-platform browser share had a narrower lead for Chrome. Chrome held 55.06% in August 2026, Safari held 28.98%, and Edge held 7.30%. Firefox recorded 3.89%, Samsung Internet 1.70%, and Opera 1.48%.
| Region and scope | Chrome | Safari | Edge | Firefox |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Europe, all platforms | 62.66% | 17.80% | 6.66% | 4.61% |
| Asia, desktop and mobile | 77.64% | 10.12% | 3.97% | 1.64% |
| North America, all platforms | 55.06% | 28.98% | 7.30% | 3.89% |
The North American figures are from Browser Market Share North America. The comparison makes the regional spread visible without treating the differently scoped Asia result as an all-platform measurement. Across these three views, Chrome was highest in Asia and lowest in North America, while Safari was highest in North America.
United States and Africa
The United States all-platform results were close to the North American regional figures. Chrome held 54.70% of U.S. browser share in August 2026, Safari held 29.11%, Edge held 7.37%, and Firefox held 3.90%. StatCounter’s source is Browser Market Share United States Of America.
The U.S. figures show a slightly lower Chrome share than North America’s 55.06% and a slightly higher Safari share than North America’s 28.98%. Edge and Firefox were also marginally higher in the United States view. These are separate reported measurements, so the small differences should not be expanded into unsupported explanations.
Africa had the highest Chrome share among the listed all-platform regional and country views, at 78.38% in August 2026. Safari held 7.45%, Opera 3.91%, Edge 3.21%, Samsung Internet 3.05%, and Firefox 2.82%.
The African results are reported in Browser Market Share Africa. The regional ranking was therefore Chrome first, Safari second, Opera third, Edge fourth, Samsung Internet fifth, and Firefox sixth among the supplied entries.
| Browser | United States, all platforms | Africa, all platforms |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | 54.70% | 78.38% |
| Safari | 29.11% | 7.45% |
| Edge | 7.37% | 3.21% |
| Firefox | 3.90% | 2.82% |
| Opera | Not listed in supplied U.S. figures | 3.91% |
| Samsung Internet | Not listed in supplied U.S. figures | 3.05% |
Taken together, the August 2026 measurements show why browser statistics should always retain their geography and platform labels. Chrome led both markets, but its reported share was 54.70% in the United States and 78.38% in Africa. Safari moved in the opposite direction, at 29.11% in the United States and 7.45% in Africa. These are measured shares of browser traffic or page views across StatCounter’s network, not estimates of unique people.
