Internet Search Statistics: Market Share, Scale, and Search Quality

A source-linked overview of internet search market share, Google Search scale, query novelty, quality testing, and emerging search behavior.

Internet search is dominated by Google, but the balance changes by device and geography. In August 2026, Google held 91.23% of worldwide search-engine share across desktop and mobile, compared with 4.37% for Bing. Mobile was more concentrated: Google reached 95.59%. Regional results also vary, while Google’s own figures show a search system handling more than 1 billion queries per day and testing hundreds of thousands of possible improvements.

Worldwide search-engine market share

The latest worldwide all-device figures in this set are for August 2026 and combine desktop and mobile usage. Google accounted for 91.23% of search-engine share worldwide. Bing followed at 4.37%, while Yahoo! held 1.24%.

The remaining named engines each represented less than 1% of worldwide share: YANDEX accounted for 0.99%, DuckDuckGo for 0.70%, and Baidu for 0.62%. These percentages describe search-engine market share, not the number of searches or the quality of results. The measurement also combines device categories, so it should not be read as a desktop-only or mobile-only result.

For SEO planning, the all-device view is a useful global baseline, but it can hide meaningful device differences. The next two sections separate the mobile and desktop measurements.

Mobile search-engine statistics

Worldwide mobile search was more concentrated around Google than the combined device result. Google accounted for 95.59% of mobile search-engine share in August 2026. YANDEX held 0.90%, Baidu 0.84%, and DuckDuckGo 0.69%.

Bing represented 0.60% of worldwide mobile search share, while Yahoo! accounted for 0.47%. The mobile figures therefore show a narrower distribution among the named engines than the all-device figures, especially for Bing and Yahoo!.

The six reported mobile shares were:

  • Google: 95.59%.
  • YANDEX: 0.90%.
  • Baidu: 0.84%.
  • DuckDuckGo: 0.69%.
  • Bing: 0.60%.
  • Yahoo!: 0.47%.

These are worldwide mobile percentages, so they should not be substituted for a particular country’s mobile audience. India, for example, had a materially different mobile distribution in July 2026.

Desktop search-engine statistics

Desktop search was less concentrated than mobile search in August 2026. Google accounted for 86.05% of worldwide desktop search-engine share, and Bing reached 8.84%. Yahoo! represented 2.15%, while YANDEX accounted for 1.10%.

DuckDuckGo held 0.70% of worldwide desktop share, and Baidu held 0.34%. Compared with the mobile figures, Bing, Yahoo!, and YANDEX each had a larger desktop share, while Google’s share was lower.

The desktop distribution reported by Statcounter was:

  • Google: 86.05%.
  • Bing: 8.84%.
  • Yahoo!: 2.15%.
  • YANDEX: 1.10%.
  • DuckDuckGo: 0.70%.
  • Baidu: 0.34%.

The device split matters when interpreting traffic reports. A site that attracts a large desktop audience may see a different engine mix from a site whose visitors primarily search on phones. These market-share statistics do not identify the share of any individual website’s visitors.

Regional and national differences

In India, Google accounted for 91.32% of search-engine share across desktop and mobile in July 2026. Bing held 4.46%, Yahoo! 1.24%, YANDEX 0.99%, DuckDuckGo 0.65%, and Baidu 0.50%.

India’s all-device figures were therefore close to the worldwide August distribution for the largest engines, but the mobile-only result was much more concentrated. Google accounted for 99.16% of mobile search-engine share in India. DuckDuckGo held 0.49%, Bing 0.18%, YANDEX 0.09%, Yahoo! 0.03%, and PrivacyWall 0.02%.

Europe showed a different pattern in July 2026. Google accounted for 89.30% of search-engine share across desktop and mobile, followed by Bing at 4.67% and YANDEX at 2.55%. Yahoo! represented 1.50%, DuckDuckGo 0.86%, and Ecosia 0.49%.

Asia’s July 2026 all-device distribution also included a stronger Baidu presence than Europe. Google held 93.86%, Bing 2.33%, Baidu 0.95%, YANDEX 0.79%, Yahoo! 0.65%, and CocCoc 0.43%.

The regional data supports a practical distinction: worldwide averages are useful for context, but country, region, and device should be kept explicit in search reporting. The named alternatives also differ by geography, with Ecosia appearing in the Europe figures and CocCoc appearing in the Asia figures.

Google Search scale and query novelty

Google’s published figures illustrate the operational scale behind a major search engine. During 2023, Google reported 4,781 Search launches, 16,871 live-traffic experiments, 719,326 search-quality tests, and 124,942 side-by-side Search experiments.

These figures measure different parts of Google’s evaluation and launch process. They should not be combined into a single total or interpreted as the number of ranking changes experienced by every website. The published counts are reported for 2023.

Google also said its Search index represented more than 100 million gigabytes of data. In the same white paper, published in 2025, Google said there are more than 1 billion Search queries around the world each day and that 15% of the searches it sees each day are searches it has never seen before. The scale statement is described as undated in the source context, so it should not be treated as a measurement for a specific day or month.

Autocomplete provides another scale indicator, although the supplied Google figure is older. In 2017, Google estimated that Autocomplete saved more than 200 years of typing time per day and said it showed more than 1 billion Autocomplete predictions each day.

The dates matter when comparing these figures. The 2023 testing counts, the 2025 white paper, and the 2017 Autocomplete estimates describe different periods and should not be presented as one synchronized snapshot.

Search quality, spam, and new modes

Google reported that its 2024 spam-fighting changes produced 45% less low-quality, unoriginal content in Search results. The claim refers to the changes completed on April 19, 2024 and is Google’s reported outcome, not an independently stated measurement in this article.

Visual search is another measurable part of search behavior. In October 2024, Google said Lens was used for nearly 20 billion visual searches per month. That figure describes Lens usage reported by Google for the stated period; it is not a percentage of all internet searches.

The same October 2024 Google update said its Shopping Graph contained information on more than 45 billion products. This is a catalog scale figure, not a count of products purchased, clicked, or shown for every query.

Taken together, the quality and product-search figures describe several distinct layers of the search ecosystem: reported changes to result quality, monthly visual-search activity, and the size of a product-information graph. Keeping those units and measurement periods separate is essential when using internet search statistics for SEO analysis.
