Google, as most of us know, is the most popular search engine on the Internet. Its popularity is so great, that the term "google" is synonymous with the word "search" and is a common household name. When you want to find anything on the world wide web, most of us "google it". The search engine was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1996, as part of a research project while they were both attending Stanford University, based on a theory of relationships between websites, that they originally called "BackRub". Their system used a formula which ranked a page according to its number of inbound links known as "backlinks" from other pages. This "pagerank" determined the best pages to display in their search results.
Over the years the Google search engine has fine tuned its formula for ranking and displaying results and has crawled trillions of website pages, checking and comparing content quality, source origination, page structure and many other factors all designed to quickly display a set of the most relative links for your search queries. As millions of web designers, marketing professionals, and search engine optimization (SEO) specialists work to game the system in an effort get their links to display ahead of others, Google is constantly evolving its algorithms to prevent abuse.
As the success of Google, Inc, has grown, so has the number of features and additional services offered by this giant in the online industry. Today, Google is a massive company, and their motto, "Do No Evil", may not entirely match their current business model, as changes to its privacy policies and practices have landed Google into congressional hearings and legal battles throughout the United States and other countries. However, most of all searches on the internet each and every day continue to take place on their servers.
Google makes most of its money mainly from its advertising program known as "Google Adwords", where links to your pages can be displayed above or alongside search results and embedded on millions of websites who share in that revenue using the "Google Adsense" program. Advertisers bid against each other for the best position, but only pay when a web visitor actually clicks on the ad.
No matter how you look at it, the impact of Google on the world wide web is tremendous. Since most online searches are performed on Google, many businesses with an online presence depend on appearance within their result pages for their livelihood. Students, office workers, executives and marketing professionals across the globe rely on the power of Google search to pull up the information they seek.
